Effect of variable flux operation on reverse osmosis membrane fouling |

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of variable flux operation on the RO fouling. A laboratory-scale RO system was fabricated to allow simultaneous experiments of four membrane modules. Membrane damage was identified by variable load cycle. Model foulants that could simulate scale formation and fouling layer were handled in the feed solution. RSM analysis was applied to define the effect of crucial process variables statistically. This led to development of the quadratic models for the prediction of fouling propensity in the RO system. The fouling mechanisms under variable operation was compared with the intermittent operation. After each experiment, the membrane was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). |
