Mesophase pitches, which can easily develop toward graphitic structure, have been applied to various types of carbon materials. Since mesophase pitches possess higher aromaticity and larger molecular weight species than isotropic pitches, they require higher operating energy to synthesize. Various researches have been conducted to obtain these mesophase pitches in an efficient way, such as using catalysts, controlling process variables, purifying and controlling the feedstocks. In this study, mesophase pitch was successfully synthesized from fluid catalytic cracking-decant oil (FCC-DO) with the aid of aluminum chloride (AlCl3) catalyst at the reaction temperature range of 360-400 °C, which is lower than the conventional mesophase synthesis temperature. FCC-DO itself was not reactive in simple heat treatment process, with the AlCl3 catalyst, however, the rate of cracking reaction and polymerization were accelerated, forming the anisotropic structure more easily. |
