4,4’-(Hexafluoroisopropylidene)diphthalic anhydride (6FDA)-based polymer membranes have been extensively used for gas separations involving natural gas sweetening, carbon capture, and hydrogen recovery. In this presentation, we demonstrate the additive processing of the polyimide membranes using poly(benzyl ether) (PBE)-based additives. The additive is designed to contain not only flexible benzyl ether linkage but also sterically hindered pendants. In particular, when incorporated, overall physical properties of the polyimide membranes are notably altered. For example, even embedment of 1% PBE significantly enhanced mechanical strength as well as gas separation performance, as affecting the chain packing structure of polyimides. |
