Hydrocarbon-based (HC) membranes have received substantial attention as an alternative of perfluorosulfonic acid-based (PFSA) membranes to attain high-performance proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). However, the HC membrane suffers poor compatibility with the electrode containing the PFSA ionomer, resulting in the low interfacial adhesion between the membrane and electrode. In this work, a new HC membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for PEMWE was developed by controlling the amount of the residual casting solvent in the membrane, which softens the surface of the HC membrane. It enables the HC ionomer to be inserted into the porous electrode layer, improving the membrane-electrode adhesion. In addition, the electrochemical properties were investigated to analyze the effect of the residual solvent on the membrane-electrode interface. |
