A study of seawater sterilization by ozone treatment for aquaculture |

Fisheries and aquaculture are believed to be one of the main sources of food and nutrition. The global market of aquaculture is increasing because of the recent demand for fishes and other seafood as they provide huge nutrition for the human being. The objectives of this study were to determine the ability of ozone to reduce the numbers of a spectrum of marine organisms and estimate the minimum ozone concentrations as measured by total residual oxidant (TRO) required to reduce organism densities as well as to produce healthy fishes. In a closed marine system, fishes often suffer by the chemical such as bromide ion or by bacteria and do not grow properly due to lack of space. To solve these problems, ozone can be used as an alternative to chlorine for disinfection of closed marine systems such as aquaria and mariculturel facilities. By ozone treatment, bromine converted to hypobromite (HOBr) and bacteria died due to an oxidative burst occurred in the cell wall of bacteria. |
