Ionic Polymer-Metal Composite (IPMC) is consist of ion exchange membrane between two metal electrodes. When the IPMC is mechanically deformed, electric signal is detected by the forced movement of the ions in membrane. Due to this mechanism, IPMC can be used as bending motion sensor. To enhance the sensitivity of IPMC sensor, we prepared novel ionic polymer membrane with large amount of ionic groups to substitute the commercial membrane. The membranes were prepared by radiation grafting of fluoropolymer and styrene monomers, and the degree of grafting was controlled by radiation dose. To analyze the membrane properties of radiation grafted IPMC, water uptake, ion exchange capacity, and ion conductivity were measured. Also, we confirmed the basic characteristics of radiation grafted IPMC sensor for biomimetic or medical application. |
