The emulsion polymerization of methylmethacrylate(MMA) was carried out without initiator in the presence of various contents of hydrogen peroxide aqueous solution(28% in water) in DDI water medium. Two different systems were used in the presence and absence of surfactants using various surfactants such as SDS, SDBS, Sodium 1-dodecanesulfonate and some of cationic and nonionic surfactants. Although without initiator, the monomer conversion reached to 70-80%, resulting in the hydrogen peroxide working as an initiator upon thermal treatment. Among various surfactants, the anionic surfactant such as SDS, SDBS and Sodium 1-dodecanesulfonate showed the highest conversion. The further results were discussed in terms of monomer conversion, molecular weight, surface tension and SEM photography. As a consequence, the anionic surfactant forms the micelle for letting the hydrogen peroxide radical to initiate and propagate the reaction. |
