The Mercury Ion Sensing Characteristics of Novel Brush Polymers Bearing Thymine Moieties on their Bristle Ends |

We report two polymers with different morphological structures but the same functional end group, thymine, that can act as sensors for detecting mercury ions. Thin films of these brush polymers exhibit reversible yet different sensitivities to mercury ions in water because of their physicochemical properties. Various physical properties of the polymers were determined by using differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetry, spectroscopic ellipsometry and contact angle analysis. The properties of the two polymers are strongly influenced by their morphological structures, which were analyzed by using synchrotron grazing incidence X-ray scattering and surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy. This study demonstrates the importance of insight into structure to the design of new sensor materials. |
