Hydrocarbon-based polymer electrolyte membrane with comb-shaped architecture was synthesized by grafting highly sulfonated poly(sulfide sulfone) side chain to poly(arylene ether sulfone) backbone. Graft polymers with different ion exchange capacities (IECs) were synthesized varying the molecular weight and the frequency of the side chain for polymer electrolyte membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) application. The fabricated membranes with IEC of 1.9-2.0 meq/g were analyzed for ion conductivity, water uptake, dimensional stability, and hydrolytic stability at high temperatures in water. In addition, morphological properties were investigated using transmission electron microscopy and small angle x-ray scattering analyses. The unique morphological property of graft polymer induced satisfying performance results, making it a promising candidate for PEMWE. |
