Organic pigments have been considered as one of the most suitable materials for colored electrophoretic ink particles in encapsuled type electrophoretic displays due to their photosensitivity, brilliance, color strength and overall stability. To apply organic pigments as electrophoretic particles, the surface of organic pigments was encapsulated with poly(methylmethacrylate) via in situ dispersion polymerization in the presence of organic pigments. Vinyltrimethoxysilane was also used as comonomer to enhance the electrophoretic properties. In this system, surface charge of pigments changed from negative to positive upon surface modification. Surface charge transfer after coating process was characterized by measuring zeta potential in aqueous system. Electrophoretic response of the modified particles in a low electric medium was analyzed by using an ELS measurement. The chemical structure, morphology and thermal properties were also investigated by FT-IR, SEM and TGA, respectively. |
