Performance of solid alkaline fuel cells using non-precious catalysts |

Solid alkaline fuel cells are operable with solid alkaline electrolytes and non-precious catalysts. In this study, several commercially available anion-exchange membranes and non-precious electrocatalysts were used to fabricate MEAs for solid alkaline fuel cells. NeoseptaTM anion-exchange membranes (ASTOM, Japan) with different physical and electrochemical properties were investigated. Ni-based electrocatalysts and commercially available Ag/C (E-Tek, USA) with different loading amounts were employed. The catalyst slurries were prepared by mixing the catalyst powder (i.e., Ni/C and Pt/C for the anode and Ag/C and Pt/C for the cathode), deionized water and the ionomer binder produced by the same polymer to the polymeric electrolyte (5%) in DMF or DMAc. PTFE-impregnated Toray 250 carbon paper (waterproof by 8% PTFE) was used and sandwiched the membranes. Fabricated MEAs were characterized and evaluated at H2/air, 50~100% RH, 60~80 oC and ambient pressure. |
