High Performance Multiple-Patterned Plasmonic Nanostructures for Electronic Eye |

Eye perceives external stimuli and conveys the sensory information to the brain. Motivated by the fact that insect eyes are composed of units called ommatidia which are complex sensory system that contains unique heirarchical structured cornea leading to efficient light absorption, we fabricated electronic eyes (E-eyes) consisting of organic photodiodes (OPDs) and organic resistive switching device (ORS). We utilized multiple patterned plasmonic electrodes exhibiting increased light absorption compared to flat electrodes. The photo-responsivities of multiple-patterned OPDs was enhanced from 1.34 AW-1 to 7.86 AW-1 and the threshold voltages of multiple-patterned OPD-ORS stacked E-eyes were reduced over half as compared with flat E-eyes. We also confirmed the reproducibility of the device by 1000 cycles bending test and multicycle usage after 48 h. Furthermore, theoretical study and near-field scanning optical microscopy revealed strong surface plasmon coupling of these nanostructured electrodes. These results proved the first successful E-eye system based on plasmonic organic optoelectronic and resistive memory device. |
