Hybrids of Graphene Oxide Single Layers and Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube at the Liquid-Gas Interface |

Graphene and carbon nanotubes(CNTs) are increasingly used in various applications. To incorporate these carbon-based nanomaterials into actual components, it is important to isolate graphene and CNT without aggregation for their use. In this work, we synthesized exfoliated graphene oxide (GO) sheets in aqueous solvent by modified Hummers and Offeman’s method. Functionalized CNTs with cethyltrimethylammonium 4-vinylbenzoate were polymerized in presence of sodium 4-styrenesulfonate and well-dispersed in methanol. By spreading f-CNTs, exfoliated single layers of GO sheets formed a hybrid with f-CNTs at the liquid-gas interface. We found that f-CNTs were oriented by compression from atomic force microscopy (AFM) results. Grazing incidence small angle X-ray diffraction (GISAXS) results also exhibited peaks corresponding to closely-packed CNT distance, indicative of orientation of CNTs along uniaxial direction. We obtained the multilayer of GO-f-CNTs by Langmuir-Schaefer deposion. |
