Dextran Sulfate Based Nanoparticles for Atherosclerosis Imaging |

Atherosclerosis is a systemic disease that is characterized by the build-up of lipid-rich plaques within the walls of the arteries. Early detection of these vulnerable plaque could significantly reduce the morbidity. Dextran sulfate, a polyanionic derivative of dextran, acts as a ligand for macrophage scavenger class A, a receptor over-expressed on matured macrophages in the atherosclerotic region. In this study, dextran sulfate-coated nanoparticles were prepared as the potential imaging agent for atherosclerosis. The physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles were investigated using various instruments, including 1H NMR, FT-IR, transmission electron microscope, and dynamic light scattering. The results demonstrated rapid uptake of the dextran sulfate-based nanoparticles by activated macrophage. |
