Synthesis of novolac resin based cardanol and its application for antibacterial coating |

Novolac resins were synthesized through the reaction of nonylphenol, 3-pentadecylphenol (PDP), cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) and cardanol with paraformaldehyde under acidic conditions and their molecular weights (Mn, Mw and PDI) and structural characteristics were analyzed. The novolacs synthesized from CNSL and cardanol had higher molecular weights, which is ascribed to cross-linking probability of CNSL and cardanol having unsaturated bonds. The applicability of prepared novolacs as antibacterial coating materials was investigated. Synthesized novolacs from PDP and cardanol exhibited greater antibacterial activity (97% or more) against the E.coli than novolacs synthesized from nonylphenol or CNSL. Comprehensive analysis of the results shows that novolac from plant-based cardanol is most suitable for application as an antibacterial coating. |
