Enhancement of low temperature performance of graphite/LiNi0.88CoxAlyO2 cell by employing ester-based liquid electrolytes |

Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are widely used as power sources in various fields due to their high energy density and long cycle life. However, poor performance of LIBs at low temperature limits their applications, and it is thus essential to improve the low temperature performance. One of the most important factor when designing liquid electrolytes for improving low temperature performance is a liquid range. Carbonate-based solvents commonly used in LIBs have high melting point, and it limits the low temperature performance. In this study, we investigate the electrochemical characteristics of LIBs with various electrolytes containing ester-based solvents, which exhibit higher capacity at low temperature than carbonate-based solvents. Analysis techniques of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have been implemented to understand the improvement of low temperature performance of LIBs. |
