The efficient excitation energy transfer and lasing characteristics of the blends comprising a fluorene-based liquid crystalline and a non-liquid crystalline photoluminescent polymer with different band gap energies are demonstrated. We obtained a very strong and low-threshold photo-pumped lasing (~20 nJ/cm2/pulse) in both the waveguide and micro-cavity devices fabricated with the blend. This low threshold is considered to originate from a largely reduced self-absorption loss by the efficient F rster-type energy transfer in the photoluminescent polymer blend with liquid crystallinity. The observation of low-threshold lasing in thin polymer films offers hope for the realization of electrically-pumped solid-state polymer lasers. Also, the lasing wavelength could be tuned by employing the cascade energy transfer in multi-component blend systems. |
