In this presentation, we address the preparation of a bio-based, photo-polymerizable compound from isosorbide (denoted as “Iso-GMA”) as an alternative to Bis-GMA and its feasibility as a photo-polymerizable material. Iso-GMA was synthesized through only two step reactions: the glycidylation of isosorbide using epihalohydrin, followed by substitution reaction with methacrylic acid. Iso-GMA was photo-polymerized with diphenyl(2,4,6-trimethylbenzoyl)phosphine oxide (TPO) using UV (ultraviolet) light to assess its properties as an adhesive. Its photochemical properties such as photopolymerizing patterns, tensile-shear strength and shrinkage ratio as well as the comparision with Bis-GMA/TEGDMA system will be presented. |
