Shape memory polyester cross-linked with glucose |

Poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) copolymers cross-linked with glucose were prepared to investigate the feasibility of high shape memory effect. Higher number of hydroxyl group compared to other cross-linkers such as glycerol and cyclic structure of glucose make it worth while to try glucose as a cross-linker. Composition of PEG, EG, and glucose, and chain length of PEG were varied in order to get a copolymer with the best mechanical and shape memory properties. The highest shape recovery (more than 90 %) was observed for the copolymer with 25 mol% of PEG-200, 75 mol% of EG, and 2.5 mol% of glucose. Experimental data and reasons for the high shape recovery ratio will be discussed. |
