Chameleon-Inspired Mechanochromic Photonic Skins Containing Nonclose-Packed Arrays |

Chameleons are able to change their skin coloration for male-female communication. This special talent is originated form a lattice of guanine nanocrystals in iridophores. Inspired from chameleons, we design photonic skins composed of a nonclose-packed face-centered cubic array of silica particles in an elastomer. The nonclose-packed arrays are developed by interparticle repulsion exerted by dense solvation layers on the particle surface, which is rapidly captured in the elastomer by photo-polymerization of the matrix. Under stretching or compression, the photonic skins pronounce a large shift of structural color. Moreover, the photonic skins exhibit elastic deformation and reversible color change because there is no significant rearrangement of silica particles. The elastic photonic skins that mimic the chameleon have a potential for various applications, including colorimetric sensors, color displays, and sound-vision transformers. |
