We present an efficient catalytic dehydration process of methanol to produce dimethylether (DME), which has drawn attention as a clean energy source and an aerosol propellant. The reaction system, reported here, allowed water containing methanol (50 %) as a feed stream with a broad operative temperature range (250°C ~ 400°C) over the potassium modified HZSM-5 catalyst, and recycling of the methanol obtained after the dehydration was consequently possible without a further distillation step. A process simulation and cost estimation indicated that the suggested process enabled a cost reduction of 30% or more in comparison to a conventional DME synthesis process from methanol over alumina catalysts. |
