Self-healing Polyurethane based on Thermally Reversible Disulfide Exchange Reaction |

Self-healing polymers have been developed because of their advantage to autonomously repair damage and extend the life of the material. In particular, a disulfide bond which is a dynamic covalent bond based on a thiol-disulfide dynamic exchange reaction received much attention. In this study, a polyurethane film with disulfide links was synthesized and evaluated the mechanical properties and self-healing efficiency. The self-healing system was triggered by the chain exchange reaction of disulfide bonds in a 2-hydroxyethyl disulfide extender. We investigated the healing effect of the polyurethane film by changing the temperature and time. The self-healing polyurethane can be applied to a variety of applications such as coating and adhesives in both aerospace and building materials. |
