In our continuing efforts to develop new polysilsesquioxane based spheres that would find practical applications, we have developed enhanced procedure for preparing UV absorbing polysilsesquioxane spheres. Compared to our previous report where 3-aminopropyltrimethoxysilane (APTMOS) was coupled with UV absorbing molecules using a coupling agent, APTMOS was directly reacted with acyl chlorides of UV absorbing molecules in this study. This method enhanced the purity of precursors and increased purity brought in better control on the size of spheres. In this study, polysilsesquioxane spheres mainly composed of trimethoxysilylpropylbezamie, trimethoxysilylpropylcinnamide, and trimethoxysilylpropyl-p-methoxycinnamide were prepared and their morphology, and UV absorbing behaviors were examined according to the particle size, composition and UV absorbing molecules. These spheres are highly expected to be applicable as UV absorbing agents in different cosmetics due to their low expected toxicity and compatibility with organic systems. |
