In field of implantable medical devices polyvinyl chloride (PVC) has been frequently used, however thrombosis and infection has been major challenges for PVC. As a new generation of functional group, Zwitterionic groups arose for anti-fouling materials to prevent thrombosis and infection. In this investigation, we confer anti-thrombogenic and anti-microbial properties to PVC by using a novel series of zwitterionic surface-modifying oligomers with polyurethane backbone (zPUs). The combination of PVC and synthesized zPUs were prepared through a hot melting process. Resistance to protein adsorption in PVC/zPUs were increased proportionally as zPU increased. Protein adsorption was tested with fibrinogen and albumin. Additionally, combination of zPU/PVC showed suppression of adhesion and activation of platelets on the surface. In conclusion, a series of zPU is very promising functional group for anti-fouling in PVC-based biomedical applications. |
