Mesophase Pitch from Petroleum Residue by a Non-Catalytic Method |

Pitch was synthesized from fluidized catalytic cracking decant oil as a raw material by a two-step heat treatment technique to investigate the mesophase content of the resulting pitch as a function of the synthetic temperature and time. Thermogravimetric and softening point (SP) analyses were performed to observe the thermal behaviors of the pitch. Structural properties were also analyzed by X-ray diffraction. Molecular weight distribution was determined by a matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry analysis. Chemical structures and the number of and aromatic components were examined by a nuclear magnetic resonance and a Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy analysis. The anisotropy/isotropy of the pitch was also observed by a polarizing microscope. The SP and carbon yield gradually increased with increasing synthetic temperature and time. The anisotropic content varies depending on the heat treatment conditions. |
