Polybutadiene based high temperature TPE was synthesized, in which graft-from anionic polymerization of butadiene and p-methylstyrene copolymers was used to graft polymerization of high Tg hard end-blocks, such as poly(t-butylstyrene). Poly(butadiene-co-p-methylstyrene)(PBM) was deprotonated at the methyl group of p-methylstyrene unit using s-butyllithium followed by polymerization with t-butylstyrene monomer to from graft poly(t-butylstyrene). After purification of the graft copolymer by acetone precipitation, the graft copolymer structure was confirmed with 1H-NMR. Both graft efficiency and graft length can be controlled by p-methylstyrene content in the PBM backbone and the quantity of monomer used in this graft-from polymerization. |
