Surface Modification of Carbon Black and its Encapsulation by Polymer by Miniemulsion Polymerization |

The purpose of this work is to synthesize polymer-encapsulated carbon black using miniemulsion polymerization. Both surface-treated and raw carbon blacks were used. Surface treatment of carbon black was achieved by grafting hydroxyl groups onto the surface by phase transition agent (PTC), than grafting with methacryloxy propyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS). After miniemulsion polymerization, the terminal double bond of MPTMS attached onto carbon black surface was found to increase the encapsulation efficiency by participating in the polymerization. |
