We demonstrate versatile and robust means of phase controllable patterning the polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) through a precise control over electrostatic interactions of small ions inside the interconnected structure of polyelectrolyte complexes. Depending on the types of PEMs, either positively deposited additive patterns or negatively etched subtractive patterns can be attainable upon exposing the PEMs film selectively to the solution of sodium cholate hydrate (SC). The relative difference in the strength of ionic complexation between polyelectrolyte chains and that of SC is plausibly attributed to these contrasting results in patterning. Suggested method here will potentially be applicable to biomolecular patterning, fabrication of microfluidic devices, and optoelectronic applications. |
