For the development of thermal conducting materials with enhanced heat managing properties, discotic liquid crystal (DLC) reactive mesogen was newly synthesized. The DLC monomer and cross-linker exhibit nanocolumn structures by self-assembly. Based on thermal and scattering analyses, it was realized that the DLC monomer forms a smectic A mesophase. DLC films fabricated at isotropic state and mesophase show high heat transfer performance up to 1.09 W/mK because of ordered hexagonal lattice structure of DLC core. The DLC column in the film can be aligned by the magnetic field. The uniaxially aligned DLC film exhibits higher thermal conductivity up to 3.00 W/mK than those without magnetic field. The DLC film can be applied to the highly efficient heat management materials for automobiles, electronics, and display devices.
