In spite of non-flammability of zinc bromine redox flow battery (ZBFB), low energy density and complex system configuration limits the application of ZBFB in large-scale energy storage system. Flowless zinc bromine battery (FL-ZBB), having most simple system configuration, has been suggested to reduce system cost and increase energy density. However, only few reports address critical issues related with practical battery system development. In this study, prototype FL-ZBB cell is devised to identify key design parameters and their influence on performance with practical system design perspective. Furthermore, material design challenges and system configuration are discussed. This research provides perspectives on FL-ZBB system and material design strategies for practical FL-ZBB system development.
