For the development of liquid crystal (LC) smart windows, an optical cell was newly fabricated by a single-step dual-stabilization process. The cell consists of photopolymerizable monomers, nematic LC (5CB) and organogelator with photoisomerizable azobenzene moiety (3AZ-BTA). Upon irradiation of UV light under a photomask, the 3AZ-BTA gels are collapsed by photoisomerization, and they are separated from photopolymerizable monomers. Consequently, LC physical gels are formed at UV light-protected region, and polymer partition walls are constructed at UV light-exposed region. Because 5CB molecules near the partition wall are homogeneously aligned, this cell can operate fast at low voltage. In addition, the partition walls improve the adhesion between substrates, which gives mechanical stability. The dual-stabilized optical cell can be used in high-performance LC smart windows.
