Surface properties of fluorinated latex films |

The surface properties of copolymer latex films prepared by batch-type emulsion polymerization of perfluoroalkyl acrylate and hydrocarbon-based alkyl methacrylate were investigated by means of contact angle and sliding angle measurements. The hydrophobicity of the latex films was estimated from contact angles of water and was proportional to the fluorine content at the surface measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The roughness and chemical composition of latex film surfaces were considered in order to explain sliding behavior of water droplet on the latex films. It was concluded that the chemical heterogeneity resulted from chain architecture was mainly responsible for the experimental observations by governing effective segregation of perfluoroalkyl groups at the surface. On the other hand, the effect of small surface roughness was negligible for the sliding angle of water droplet in the present study. |
