Nanostructured Cellulose and Two type Plasmonic Nanoparticles Composite Enabled Salt Resistance for Continuous Desalination |

Recently, the interfacial solar to steam generation has proven as an effective and environmentally friendly water purification technology. When this technology is applied for desalination by generating steam from brine, the efficiency of steam generation is reduced as salt accumulates on the photothermal membrane. In this study, highly salt rejecting photothermal membranes consisting of cellulose nanofibers, a polymer binder (polyethylenimine) and gold/silver nanoparticles, have been developed. The optimal concentration and ratio of gold/silver nanoparticles provide a high solar absorption and photothermal conversion efficiency. The polyethylenimine-cellulose nanofiber network inhibited salt formation by repulsing salt ions while controlling the mass flow of water. As a result, the photothermal membrane exhibited a maximum water evaporation rate of 1.31 kg m-2h-1 (82% of photothermal efficiency) under the condition of 3.5 wt% NaCl solution. The mechanism of salt resistance was studied based on various characterizations. |
