Conventional Li-ion batteries have limited theoretical capacity, which is acting as an obstacle to EV (electric vehicle) and ESS industries. Therefore, research on next-generation batteries beyond the limits of conventional Li-ion batteries is continuing. Li-S batteries have high energy density and theoretical capacity, but they suffer from critical problem like polysulfide shuttle effect. In this study, we focused on the effect of physically blocking the diffusion of polysulfide, so we prepared three carbon papers, coated by solutions with different PTFE concentration, with having different permeability to liquid organic electrolyte. Through various electrochemical analysis, we confirmed that the permeability of the carbon papers was the only factor in performance, then we proposed an optimal point for the best battery performance in the trade-off between ionic conductivity and polysulfide shuttle suppression by controlling the permeability of the interlayers. |
