Thermogelling polymer aqueous solution turns from sol-to-semisolid gel as the temperature increases. As a minimally invasive drug delivery system or 3D cell culture system, the thermogelling system provides a unique platform due to its simple procedure of the encapsulating drugs and cells. Recently, we developed polypeptide-based thermogelling systems and synthesized a series of polypeptide-based thermogelling block copolymers and investigated for structure-property relationship, sol-gel transition mechanisms, and their biomedical applications as drug delivery systems and three dimensional cell culture scaffolds. Compared with previous thermogelling systems, polypeptide-based systems have several advantages such as 1)no pH drop during the degradation, 2)stable in vitro but degradable in vivo, 3)low critical gel concentration, and 4)facile control of specific nanoassemblies. In this presentation, we will summarize our progress on thermogelling biodegradable polymer aqueous solutions. |
