Curing and Properties of Epoxy/CNT Composites Comprising Surface Modified CNTs |

Homogeneous dispersion and strong interfacial bonding have been found to be necessary conditions to take full advantage of the remarkable properties of MWNTs for reinforcement of composites. We have developed a fully integrated MWNT composite material through the functionalized MWNTs. The functionalization of MWNTs was achieved by treatment with 4-aminobenzoic acid in polyphosphoric acid. The functionalization led to improved interaction between the MWNTs and the epoxy resin. This result was evidenced via SEM image of fractured surface of epoxy/CNT composites. The curing behavior and properties of epoxy/CNT nanocomposite systems were investigated by DSC. The curing rate of the nanocomposite systems increased as functionalized MWNT content was increased. The thermal decomposition behavior of the nanocomposites was measured by DMA was used to investigate the physical properties of the epoxy/CNT nanocomposites. The coefficient of thermal expansion of nanocomposites was measured via TMA. |
