Polypropylene(PP)/montmorillonite(MMT) nanocomposites were found to exhibit higher stiffness, improved gas barrier properties and flame retardancy. In this study, PP/MMT nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending with a twin screw extruder for the enhancement of the fire resistance with significantly reduced amount of halogen free flame retardants such as ammonium polyphosphate(APP), Mg(OH)2 and Al(OH)3. Maleic anhydride grafted PP (MAH-g-PP) was used as a compatibilizer in order to assist the dispersibility of MMT in the PP matrix. From the results of X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy(TEM) measurement of nanocomposites, the exfoliated morphology of PP nanocomposite was investigated with increasing the content of MAH-g-PP. Excellent flame retardancy of the PP nanocomposite, UL94 V-0 rating, was obtained with reduced amount of the flame retardant. It was observed that the fire resistance of PP/MMT nanocomposite was strongly depended on the content of flame retardant and the dispersibility of MMT.
