Integration of gas diffusion layer (GDL) with flow field is essential for the enhancement of performance fuel cell by reducing reactants pathway and thickness of membrane-electrode assembly (MEA). GDL acts as a passage of reactants and water, and electrical connection. However, GDL causes electrical resistance despite high electrical conductivity of GDL. Also, thick GDL increases reactant pathway, which results in increased mass transport resistance, and occupies a large portion of MEA. Eliminating GDL in MEA can reduce electrical and mass transport resistance. To eliminate GDL, the alternative that functions as both flow field and GDL is placed in the flow field of bipolar plate. This work proposed GDL-less MEA by substituting graphene foam with flow field and GDL, resulting in enhanced cell performance. Single cell test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy were evaluated to investigate the effect of graphene foam as GDL and flow field on cell performance. |
