Wax is solid-like plastic at low temperature, but it becomes a low viscous liquid when the temperature rises to around 100 ℃. It is non-polar material that is chemically very stable and does not have any functional groups in the chain. To functionalize non-polar polypropylene wax, grafting of polar groups to the main chain of polypropylene wax is used usually by reacting with reactive monomer. In this study, the solution polymerization was carried out by adding maleic anhydride in polypropylene wax, and the change of acid value was studied by varying four variables. The correlation between melting point and molecular weight was also determined. As the contents of maleic anhydride monomer increased, the acid value increased. As the reaction temperature and reaction time increased, the acid value increased. The hydrolysis resulted in the increased acid value as the anhydride group is converted to the carboxylic acid group. |
