Since the cornea is unique in its biology and physiology, such a device would be required about 80% of water content to interact with cells of different types and it should be adequate high transparency attributed to be used as artificial cornea. Hydrogels are attractive materials for biomedical applications due to their versatility and excellent biocompatibility. Also, It is a hydrophilic and crosslinking polymeric materials capable of absorbing a large amount of water while maintaining a three-dimensional network structure. In this experiment, pHEMA interpenetrated PEG hydrogels have been prepared by immersing PEG hydrogels into pHEMA aqueous solution and subsequence irradiation with UV. The mechanical strength of the hydrogel was dependant on the immersing and the UV irradiation time. As a result, the mechanical strength of the IPN Hydrogel was increased 50 folds than bare PEG hydrogel, maintaining high water content (more than 70%). |
