Since the commercialization of LiCoO2 in 1990, the atomic substitution of lithium-ion batteries(LIBs) cathode materials has been an essential technology for LIBs. In this progress report, we not only summarize the previous doping research which focused on the optimization of a bulk doping composition but also introduce a new doping strategy, namely "electrochemical reaction mechanism control doping". we suggest detailed methodological approaches for advanced doping studies, where the consideration of the doping method takes significance as great as designing doping configurations. As the methodological approaches for doping studies, we show a new "secondary doping" with exemplary experimental results showing that functioning dopant are homogenously dispersed on the layered cathode materials by using supporting dopant. We hope that this study provides insights as to the direction of doping research of LIBs, as well as the history of the atomic substitution in layered cathode materials. |
