Preparation and characterization of activated carbons from chitosan flakes |

Chitosan was used as precursor for the preparation of ACs by carbonization and chemical activation. In this work, potassium hydroxide was employed as activating agent for chemical activation. The mixing mass ratio of potassium hydroxide to the carbonized chitosan was in the range of 1:1 to 1:4. The prepared chitosan based ACs had been characterized by low temperature nitrogen adsorption isotherms, SEM, FT-IR and XRD. In particular, the textural and surface energetic properties such as the BET surface area, pore size distribution, pore volume and adsorption energy distribution were determined using nitrogen adsorption isotherms. Nitrogen adsorption isotherms of chitosan flake based ACs can be classified as a mixture of type I and type IV, indicating the existence of well-developed pore structures.
