Lignin-based Carbon / Clay Hybrid Materials for Composite and Adsorbent Applications |

Lignin is an aromatic heterogeneous complex biopolymer with aliphatic moieties from woody plants. Lignin-based carbon materials inclding carbon fiber and activated carbon are a field of utilizing research of lignin, focusing on its relatively high carbon content among biomass and economic advantage. Sepiolite is a kind of silicate clay minerals with inherent fibrous and porous structure. Carbon nanomaterials and clay minerals have commonality in reinforcing mechanical, thermal, and crystallization properties when used as reinforcing materials for composite materials. Both can also be used as porous materials utilizing a porous structure. In this study, the lignin/ sepiolite hybrid materials is carbonized to produce lignin-based carbon / clay hybrid materials. The prepared hybrid material is used as a reinforcing material of polylactic acids composites material and a adsorbent material for wastewater treatment. The effect of reinfocerment and adsorbent properties are evaluated. |
