A cardanol-based flame retardant plasticizer, bis(cardanyl) phenylphosphonate (CP), was synthesized for poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). As increasing in the CP content, the flexibility and flame retardancy of PVC were improved, due to the presence of long alkyl chain and phosphonate group of CP, respectively. Meanwhile, it was found that unsaturated hydrocarbon of CP could be self-cross-linked by heat treatment. The cross-linked network induced the formation of graphitized char layer and anti-dripping performance, resulting in an additional improvement on flame retardancy of PVC. Moreover, the PVC films retained flexibility while maintaining transparency even after the formation of cross-linked network. These results indicated that CP with self-crosslinkable property is a prospective candidate to enhance the flame retardancy and flexibility of PVC. |
