Local drug release systems using external stimuli such as temperature, magnetic field, and ultrasound have been actively studied. In this study, we designed the efficient strategy for drug release induced by conversion of external light into heat. Melanin, perfluorohexane (PFH), and the methotrexate (MTX) were loaded into polylactic acid (PLA) nanoparticles. The PLA nanoparticles have a relatively regular arrangement and their mean size was 76 nm. When exposed to a near infrared (NIR) 808 laser for 10 min, the temperature of the PLA nanoparticle solution rose by 43.9 °C. The released drug amount from the PLA nanoparticles in PBS solution was 81.99% of total MTX for 24 h after the NIR laser irradiation. In contrast, 67.30% of total MTX was released from the PLA nanoparticles without the NIR laser irradiation. Overall, the drug release system stimulated by light are expected to be used effectively in photothermal therapy. |
