The surface properties of commercial clay (Georgia clay) were modified using organic and inorganic plasticizers in order to control the plastic behavior of clay minerals in suspension and during plastic forming processes. Polyethylene glycol (PEG) 300 and Dodecylamine (DA) were applied to change the hydrophilic and hydrophobic properties of the clay minerals. Modified-clay minerals by plasticizers to know clay structure, morphology, surface area/functional group, and water/plasticizer contents were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), BET surface area measurement, Thermo gravimetric analysis (TG), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The physical properties such as viscosity and plasticity of modified-clay by plasticizers were revealed to be correlated to the plasticizers type and their deposited amounts. |
