Study of the Multi-coating Process in Replica Method for Silicon Carbide Cellular Ceramics |

Polycarbosilane (PCS) has been applied as organic preceramic material to make silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics. Especially, PCS has useful materials to fabricate 3-D structures due to soluble in organic solutions. The replica method is also suitable to fabricate cellular ceramics with preceramic solutions. However, the replica method has disadvantages to make sturdy 3-D ceramic structures. In this study, we applied the multi-coating process to this method for SiC cellular ceramics having high mechanical properties. In addition, we utilized not only PCS but also aluminum doped PCS (Al(0.25%, 2.5%)-PCS) as preceramic materials in the multi-coating process. In this modified method, the curing and heat-treatment processes were carried out at 200°C and 1800°C, respectively. We demonstrated that the multi-coating process could improve mechanical properties of the SiC cellular ceramics on account of tunable size of pores and struts of the structure by the number of times of the process. Furthermore, we studied the aluminum doping effects of PCS solutions. The results revealed that the aluminum would be acted as a sintering additive during heat-treatment process and also increase the mechanical properties of SiC 3-D structures. |
