A large amount of sludge is produced during the silicon wafer cutting process, which is existed in the form of a mixture of silicon particles, abrasive silicon carbide (SiC) particles, cutting lubricant and metallic fragments. In this experiment, an approach is presented for reducing the chromite ore with the help of Silicon Sludge by silicothermic reduction process. The mechanism and kinetics of the carbothermic reduction of a natural chromite was studied at 1300–1500OC in the presence of Si Sludge. Pellets with Si sludge, chromium ore and binding components were heated in the flow of Ar gas. To optimize the current reduction process of chromite, a good knowledge of reduction mechanism involved is required. The basic component in chromite ore is FeCr2O4, thus, kinetic investigation of FeCr2O4 with different amount of carbon is also necessary for reducing the chromite and fabricating ferrochrome alloy eventually. During the experiments, the gas components were analyzed for CO and CO2. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis, chemical analysis, and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) were made as technical experiment for analyzing the reduction of chromite ore. |
