Supra-molecular assembly relying upon the non-covalent bonds of two end-functionalized polymers offers a great opportunity, not only for constructing nanoscale structures reminiscent of conventional block copolymer morphologies, but also for tailoring surface properties by facile separation of the two polymers after assembly. Here we report the solvent vapor driven formation of supra-molecular nanostructures in a polymer blend consisting of two complementarily end-interacting species of polymer, di & mono-end-sulfonated polystyrene (SPS)/di & mono-end-aminated poly(ethylene oxide) (APEO). At the stoichiometric composition of the two polymers, a blend film was spin-coated, followed by solvent annealing, which yielded both a two- and three-dimensional multi-layered nanostructure in which approximately 20 nm spherical APEO domains were pseudo-hexagonally organized over a very large area. |
