Recently, 3,6-(2-thiophenyl)-substituted diketopyrrolopyrrole (thiophenyl DPP)-based materials have emerged as extremely attractive materials for both OFETs and OPVs. The DPP core with electron-deficient nature exhibits a planar conjugated bicyclic structure, which leads to strong π-π interactions. Besides, the two thiophene units adjacent to the DPP can alleviate their steric repulsions with DPP to maintain high coplanarity of the polymer backbone, which is essential for achieving efficient charge transport properties and low bandgaps. Herein, in various materials based on DPP, the scientific background and results reflected in systematic and logical approaches towards the goal of developing functional materials for organic electronics are presented. |
